The European Commission has modified the Energy Performance Building Directive (EPBD) that would require member nations to make it compulsory for energy efficiency ratings to be published in all homes for sale advertisements beginning in 2012. Currently all buildings in Europe must be rated whenever the building changes occupants or sold. It was found, however, that the ratings are not often viewed when potential buyers first view the home. Beginning in 2012, the European Union (EU) Directive will make it compulsory for the ratings to be published upfront giving buyers vital information on the energy performance of the home.
RESNET has been in a dialog with the EU EPBD for a number of years. The dialog’s purpose to share RESNET’s experience with home energy ratings with the EU member states. The goal is to harmonize the rating procedures between the U.S. and Europe.
