Guide to Cold Winter Preparation in Las Vegas

February 8th, 2018 - Posted by Penguin Heating & Air Conditioning under RESNET News

One of the best things about living in Las Vegas is the wonderful summer and relatively mild winters. That doesn’t mean, however, that you shouldn’t be prepared for the winter, as temperatures do dip down – especially at night.
The effect of cold weather can be dangerous, especially for the elderly, sick or those with low immunity. Keeping warm is essential, so, what should you be doing to prepare yourself for the Vegas winter period?
Clothes
It is important to make sure that you have suitable and adequate clothes throughout the winter – not only for when you go out but also in case you have problems with your heating at home, work or visiting others.
Thick sweaters, socks and pants are useful, and you should think about wrapping up warm when you head out with gloves, scarves and hats.

Prepare your Home
You should ensure that the heating system in your home is working properly for when you need it. It is recommended to get it checked before the cold sets in so that it is working well when you need it and doesn’t give you any nasty (and cold) surprises.
Regardless of whether you have gas central heating or an HVAC system, you should check it beforehand, and if you think that there is an issue you should get it fixed or replaced as soon as possible – making sure that you are ready for the beginning of the cold weather.
If you have an HVAC system, it is a good idea to check and change your filters and check your thermostat. You should aim to change your filters about once a month over the winter if you are using your HVAC system substantially. You might, however, want to do this more often if you live somewhere which is particularly dusty. It is also recommended that you thoroughly dust and vacuum the inside of your home to ensure that there are a few particles in the air as possible – which can clog up the filters of your heating system.

You can also think about adding extra insulation to your home, which will mean that it is more energy efficient, stopping any warm air from escaping. This is also good for the summer as it will also prevent the air which has been cooled by your air conditioning from getting out. Loft insulation and double glazing are good options for this, as well as ensuring that you reduce draughts around the windows and doors.
Winter Tires
Although Las Vegas doesn’t suffer from heavy snow or ice, the winter does bring a lot of rain. This means that driving can be treacherous, and this is why you should prepare your car for the Vegas winter.
Winter tires are specially designed to make it safer to drive in cold and wet weather – with biting edges and cleverly designed tire treads.
Whilst the Las Vegas winter isn’t as harsh as many other places, it is still a good idea to be prepared. By ensuring that you are ready for the cold, you will find that you can carry on with your life with little or no disruption.
