The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is in the process of developing an American consensus standard for measuring building energy performance in a rating program. ASHRAE Standard 214P, Standard for Determining and Expressing Building Energy Performance in a Rating Program, is being written to standardize building energy rating programs by requiring the minimum content of any labels associated with rating programs, establishing minimum requirements for rating program documentation and other essential components in rating programs. The standard would cover commercial and residential buildings. ASHRAE has formed the SPC 214P Committee who is tasked with developing a standard for standardizing the content of a building energy rating program and establish minimum requirements for rating program documentation. RESNET Executive Director Steve Baden has been appointed by ASHRAE to serve on the SPC 214P Committee. The ASHRAE 214P Committee will be working on: The minimum disclosure of building energy use via a rating label and supporting summary documentation. The boundaries for the modeling of buildings and building sites to estimate or predict building energy use and minimum requirements for measuring and expressing energy use of buildings and building sites that are in operation. Acceptable credentialing criteria for individuals applying this standard and reporting building energy use. The standard will cover both asset and performance ratings. The minimum format and content of the rating disclosure, the label, and supporting documentation.
