State of Michigan Adopts Energy Rating Index Compliance Option to State Energy Code

On February 8, 2016 the State of Michigan will join the ranks of states that have adopted the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).  Included with the adoption is the Energy Rating Index compliance option (R406).

The required Energy Rating Index scores in Michigan that must be met are:

Climate Zone 5                                   55 or lower

Climate Zone 6                                   54 or lower

Climate Zone 7                                   53 or lower

The Energy Rating Index scores required in the state are contained in Section R406 of the 2015 IECC.

The RESNET HERS® Index is one method of demonstrating compliance to the Energy Rating Index option of the 2015 IECC.

In Michigan in 2015 there were 2,089 homes rated according to the RESNET standards and issued a HERS® Index Score.  The average HERS® Index Score of homes rated in the state was 59.
