I recently have had a homeowner complain about her 3 1/4″ x 3/4″ site finished hardwood floors contracting in many areas on her first floor. The house is located in Richmond, VA and the house is an ENERGY STAR certified home. The house also has a conditioned crawl space. The house is also equipped with a gas furnace for the first floor area and a heat pump for the second floor area. The hardwood floor installers inspected the hardwood floors and found that the moisture content of the hardwood floors were 5% which is below the 7 – 8% which is a more typical measurement. They also measured the air content and reported that the air did not have enough humidity. The hardwood floor installer believes that the lack of humidity is due to the conditioned crawl space below and that the homeowner needs to have a humidifier installed.

Do you feel that the conditioned crawl space has any connection to having too low humidity in the house?

Thanks for opening this forum for energy efficiency. It is always good to find new ways to save and monopolize on energy efficient opportunities. Plus, it is always nice to know what to expect when it comes to energy costs when moving to a new area. These types of expenses can really vary from one area to the next.

Your website is wonderful! And Jeremy, I am not sure about whether or not the conditioned crawl space is affecting the humidity of your home. However, I do think that you can call a local HVAC professional to ask them this question. They will probably know the answer!
