Required Training & Examination for Contractors

RESNET EnergySmart Contractor

To gain the "RESNET Qualified EnergySmart Contractor" designation (and to be listed in the RESNET directory), you must complete an energy training course and pass an exam (if you have BPI Building Analyst or BPI Building Envelope certification, you are exempt). Please note: You must complete your training and pass the exam within 90 days of signing up with RESNET, or your membership will be terminated.


Training Course

Training includes 8 hours of instruction which must be completed through an Approved Contractor Education and Qualification (CEQ) Provider. (Find a CEQ Provider).

Training topics include:

  • Principles of energy efficiency
  • Cost-effective energy efficient practices
  • The house as an inter-related system
  • Combustion safety
  • Work scope procedures and prioritization

Examination

The exam is 50 multiple-choice questions with a 2-hour time limit. It is administered by RESNET, and can be taken anytime. You must arrange your exam time with your CEQ Provider. If you do not pass the exam, you may re-take it.
