RESNET Revises Interim Guidelines for Thermographic Inspections of Buildings

Apr 17, 2012

The RESNET Board of Directors adopted the Interim Guidelines for Thermographic Inspections of Buildings on September 29, 2012.  The intent is that the guidelines will be rolled into RESNET’s Chapter 8 on performance testing.  In the RESNET Technical Committee’s work to roll the standard into Chapter 8 and from feedback from the infrared testing industry a number of issues were found regarding the implementation of the guidelines.  The greatest issue was the requirement that the training and certification testing would be developed by RESNET and that only RESNET accredited Rater Training Providers could provide the training.  This has held up any raters being trained to implement the guidelines.

To address the issues identified by the industry the RESNET Board of Directors have amended the interim guidelines.

The key provision of the revised guidelines is that a RESNET designated Building Science Thermographer must be trained in in accordance with the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) SNT-TC-1A and ASNT CP-105.  The candidates must at a minimum by certified as a RESNET certified Rating Field Inspector and must complete a course of study that fully complies with the ASNT Level II (the national thermographic certification standard).  The course of study needs to meet the minimum ASNT requirements of 32 classroom hours and successful completion of an exam that is general (written), application (written) and practical (hands-on).  To view  the revised guidelines click on RESNET Revised Interim Guidelines for Thermographic Inspections of Buildings

The RESNET Technical Committee will use the revised guidelines as the basis for the incorporation into Chapter 8.
