RESNET® Code of Ethics

1. Statement of Purpose

1.1 This Code of Ethics applies to all RESNET-accredited organizations—including Rating, Training, and Software Providers—and to all individuals holding RESNET certifications, including HERS® Raters, Rating Field Inspectors, HERS® Modelers, HERSH2O® Raters, Quality Assurance Designees, and Instructors.

2. Professional Conduct

2.1 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall perform ratings and make recommendations with objectivity, neutrality, and professional judgment.
2.2 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall avoid conduct that could reasonably be expected to harm the reputation, credibility, or best interests of RESNET, its standards, its trademarks, the profession, or the services provided.
2.3 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall communicate with builders, clients, and other affected parties honestly, transparently, and responsibly when a complaint, quality-assurance finding, or investigation arises, in accordance with policies adopted by the RESNET Board of Directors.

3. Representations of Services, Credentials, and Fees

3.1 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall not make false, misleading, or materially inaccurate statements regarding their qualifications, services, certifications, accreditation status, or authorization to use RESNET trademarks.
3.2 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall clearly disclose all applicable fees, as well as the general scope and expected deliverables of their services, before conducting a home energy rating or providing other services.
3.3 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall use the RESNET®, HERS®, and other RESNET owned trademarks only in accordance with RESNET policies, standards, licensing agreements, and applicable guidance, and only while in good standing.

4. Conflicts of Interest and Independence

4.1 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall not accept compensation—financial or otherwise—from more than one interested party for the same service unless all interested parties have provided informed consent.
4.2 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall inform clients of their right to seek competitive bids for any work recommended as a result of a rating.
4.3 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall ensure that financial interests, business relationships, or other affiliations do not influence rating results, professional judgment, or the integrity of RESNET-certified work.

5. Ethical Use of RESNET Trademarks and Intellectual Property

5.1 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall use RESNET trademarks, logos, and certification marks only to represent work performed in compliance with RESNET standards and policies.
5.2 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall not use RESNET trademarks in a manner that is misleading, unauthorized, or inconsistent with the actual scope of certification, accreditation, or services provided.
5.3 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall immediately cease use of RESNET trademarks upon suspension, expiration, termination, or other loss of authorization, as required by RESNET policies or agreements.
5.4 Certified individuals and accredited providers shall cooperate with RESNET in addressing improper, unauthorized, or misleading use of RESNET trademarks.

6. Enforcement

6.1 Failure to comply with any principle contained in this Code of Ethics may constitute a violation of RESNET’s ethical standards and may result in corrective action, disciplinary measures, or loss of certification, accreditation, or trademark authorization, consistent with RESNET policies.
