Energy Rating Index Option to be Maintained in the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC)

Apr 25, 2016

At the recently completed 2018 IECC code hearings in Louisville, Kentucky, efforts to remove the Energy Rating Index option in the 2018 IECC were not successful.  This means that the option will be preserved in the next version of the code.

Other significant actions at the code hearing promoted by the RESNET Board of Directors were:

  • Adoption of the ANSI/RESNET/ICC Standard 301 for the calculation of the Energy Rating Index

  • Adoption of the ANSI/RESNET/ICC Standard for conducting blower tests

Efforts to change how the Energy Rating Index is calculated were also defeated.

RESNET and its strategic partners were very active and effective in advocating our positions at the code hearings.

Another action at the Louisville 2018 IECC code hearing was that the Leading Builders of America proposal to increase the Energy Rating Index scores from (51 to 55) to (57 to 62) was approved.  This action will make the Energy Rating Index option more attractive to builders.

These actions will be reconsidered at the 2018 IECC final hearings in Kansas City in October.  The industry’s voice must be heard to preserve the progress achieved in Louisville.

RESNET will be issuing a call to action that explains the issues at stake and how to make your voice more effective.
