The sustainable building community has lost an effective voice with the recent passing of Kim Shanahan. For many years, Kim was the Executive Officer of the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association. He was appointed to the position after serving as the organization’s board President for years. As the home builder association’s Executive Officer, he displayed a leadership role in the incorporation of green building and water efficiency in the Santa Fe housing market. His greatest contribution to the HERS® industry was his advocacy of a requirement for a HERS Index Score with the City of Santa Fe’s Residential Green Building Code. The city’s green building code requires a HERS Index Score of 60 or less. Kim was also a tireless advocate for water efficiency. He played a key role in the launching of the Water Efficiency Rating Score program which is also part of the Santa Fe green building code. After leaving the association at the end of 2018, Mr. Shanahan became a private sustainability consultant focusing on water conservation, indoor air quality, energy efficiency, and affordable housing. The energy performance and water efficiency community will miss this dedicated pioneer.
