This coordination matrix was developed as an example to help builders plan, communicate, and execute the activities necessary to complete a HERS® Rating for a single-family detached home. Successful HERS projects depend on more than final testing. The quality of the final rating is influenced by decisions and activities that occur throughout design, scheduling, purchasing, installation, inspections, and closeout. Many delays, failed inspections, certificate corrections, and missed program requirements occur not because work was performed incorrectly, but because key participants were not aligned on timing, responsibilities, or documentation expectations. This matrix is intended to serve as a practical project coordination tool. It identifies common activities performed by builders, HERS Raters, Rating Field Inspectors, contractors, and quality assurance personnel throughout construction and highlights where coordination is needed to keep the rating process moving efficiently. This document is not intended to create new requirements or replace the HERS Standard, energy efficiency program requirements, provider procedures, local code requirements, or contractual obligations. Not every activity will apply to every project, and builders should adapt the matrix to fit their construction methods, programs, and business practices. Builders are encouraged to review this matrix together with their HERS Rating Company and field teams at the beginning of a project or community rollout to establish clear expectations and reduce avoidable issues later in construction.
