RESNET’s Michael Matthews on the forces driving high-performance building RESNET® recently crossed 5 million registered HERS® Ratings — a milestone Programs Engagement Specialist Michael Matthews says reflects a lasting shift in how builders design, construct and market new homes. Michael writes that builders increasingly treat energy efficiency as core value, investing in training, quality assurance and long-term partnerships. At the same time, HERS Raters have evolved from third-party inspectors into technical advisors who help turn building science into repeatable field practice. The HERS Index provides a shared, data-driven language for builders, lenders, utilities, code officials and consumers. Each rated home adds to a growing performance database that helps identify trends, refine practices and improve homes industry-wide. Homebuyers are also raising expectations for lower utility bills, better comfort, healthier indoor air and greater resilience — even when they do not ask for those features by name. “Many buyers may not initially ask for advanced framing, superior air sealing or optimized HVAC design, but they immediately recognize the benefits once they experience them.” Looking to the next 5 million ratings, Michael sees continued progress through collaboration among builders, Raters, utilities, manufacturers, policymakers and consumers.
