“California Here We Come” RESNET HERSH2O® Launched in the Golden State

Apr 27, 2021

RESNET’s water efficiency rating program, HERSH2O, has been launched in the state of California.

The first step was getting the California Energy Commission’s accredited rating providers CalCERTS and CHEERS approved by RESNET as HERSH2O providers. This means HERS® Raters, certified by CalCERTS and CHEERS that successfully complete the RESNET online HERSH2O Rater Training will be able to provide HERSH2O Ratings for their builder clients.

RESNET is a WaterSense Home Certification Organization and HERSH2O is a WaterSense Approved Certification Method under version 2. This means all HERS® Raters that complete the WaterSense Labeled Homes Version 2 training on the RESNET Training Portal can offer the WaterSense Label for Homes.

To achieve the WaterSense Label using HERSH2O, a home must achieve an index score of 70 or less and meet a few simple requirements, like installing WaterSense labeled fixtures.

HERSH2O is a system for rating whole-house water efficiency that includes both indoor and outdoor uses. The average family spends more than $1,000 annually on water costs.

HERSH2O provides a simple rating on a scale from 0-100+, which can be used to easily compare to water efficiency among different homes. The lower ratings mean less water use. The HERSH2O Index was developed as part of a partnership between RESNET and the International Code Council (ICC), Natural Resource Defense Council, and the EPA WaterSense Program. The basis for HERSH2O is ANSI/RESNET/ICC Standard 850.
