After serving as the Deputy Director of the FSEC Energy Research Center since 1990, Philip Fairey has announced that he is retiring on July 31, 2025. RESNET considers Philip Fairey as a pioneer of the HERS industry and one of the “fathers” of RESNET’s technical standards. He has contributed greatly to making HERS Index Scores the industry standard for the testing, inspection, and labeling of the energy, water, and carbon performance of homes. Philip has served twice as President of the RESNET Board of Directors, and currently serves as Secretary of the RESNET Board. Mr. Fairey is the most senior member of the RESNET Board, having served since 2001. Mr. Fairey is also the chair of the RESNET Standards Management Board, which oversees the maintenance and amending of RESNET ANSI standards. Mr. Fairey has more than 40 years’ experience in building science research. He initiated the building science research program at FSEC in 1980. Mr. Fairey is the author or co-author of four books and more than 80 peer-reviewed technical articles and has received two U.S. Patents. In addition, he received the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Award for Innovation in Research in 1984 and the University of Central Florida’s highest award for research in 1987. He also served as the Interim Director of the Center from 2002 to 2004. Prior to assuming the Deputy Director position, he spent ten years at FSEC conducting research in buildings and energy efficiency. While retiring from the FSEC Energy Research Center, Philip says, “I will not be completely ending what I love to do. I plan to remain as interactive as possible and will be available as a part-time consultant in the building energy sustainability field. Building Consultants Group, LLC will function as the organization from which I provide services following my retirement from FSEC.” We are sure, however, that Philip and his wife, Pat, will be taking advantage of the retirement to explore on exciting international expeditions. RESNET staff and Board members greatly appreciate Philip’s contributions to the HERS Industry and building science and wish him the best in his new endeavors. Please reach out to Philip and wish him “bon voyage”. He can be reached at philip.fairey@gmail.com
