RESNET Adopts Formal Interpretation on Restricting Whole-House Fans for Verification of Federal Residential Energy Efficiency Tax Credits

Apr 28, 2016

There was uncertainty by some certified RESNET HERS® Raters on how to interpret the definition of whole-house fans in the ANSI/RESNET/ICC Standard 301-2014 and how to treat whole house fans in the verification of homes for the federal residential energy efficiency tax credits.

To clarify how whole-house fans are treated in the ANSI/RESNET/ICC Standard 301 the RESNET Standards Development Committee (SDC) 300 has adopted a formal interpretation on defining the technology:

To be considered a whole-house fan by ANSI/RESNET/ICC 301-2014 the fan must provide an average air exchange rate with the outdoors of at least 5 air changes per hour.

The SDC 300 also adopted an interpretation on treating whole-house for the verification of the federal energy efficiency homes tax credit:

Whole-house fans shall not be included in the tax credit calculations of RESNET
